There are many different opportunities that students get when working in the Success Center. One area that students
work on is social and behavioral concerns. I have been working with students in a program called ART (Aggression Replacement
Therapy). During the school year we discuss ways to help students become better socially, and behave more appropriately.
Words that we discuss include: courage, integrity, service, humanity, perseverance, gratitude, respect, cooperation,
goal setting, self-esteem, honesty, caring, patience, responsibility, self-control.
Social / Behavioral
During the school day, I work with
students who qualify to work in the Success Center. I work with 1 - 5 students at a time. We discuss all the above mentioned
vocabulary, as well as problems that arise on the playground, problems in the classroom or how to handle other varying situations.
Math
I also
work with students in the area of math. This is a rotating group of students. I work with 3 - 13 students in these
math groups. I help with any areas that students' struggle in. Some areas that I help with are: multiplication,
division, money, time and fractions. The students will all set goals in each area. As they reach their goals,
new goals and new groups are formed. If students are unable to reach their goal/s, then the classroom teacher will be
contacted about starting a GEI.
GEI
(General Education Intervention)
A GEI is a process that general education
teachers use to help students with an area that they struggle with. If a student is struggling with addition.
Then the general classroom teacher will create a goal around this area, and work for approximately 9 weeks on helping this
student achieve this goal. If the goal is reached, then the GEI team can look at discontinuing the GEI, if the goal
is not reached, then the GEI team will discuss other options to help the student.
Communication
I try to communicate to students
and parents on their progress. I make phone calls, email messages or will visit in person about any areas of concern
that you may have. If you have any questions or comments, please email me or stop in and visit.
